DROP is a non-profit organisation focusing on building and supporting schools. We also work to provide learning aids to support children’s education in underprivileged areas of our world. DROP is a charity registered in Norway.
DROP was originally formed by some of the students and staff of Red Cross Nordic United World College. DROP works under the principle of “Schools Building Schools”, i.e. schools in more privileged parts of the world help support schools in less privileged regions.
The name of the organisation, DROP, emphasizes that even a single person’s small efforts can help to create great results just as small drops can make a mighty ocean. So, for DROP, every little counts.

DROP’s Partnership with Raselas Diversity School, Rafto, Addis Ababa
Short-term goal:
-Maintain the school with enough money to pay the rent every month (5000 NOK) to keep the school in existence. Achieved
Mid-term goal:
- Be able to pay at least one better educated teacher’s salary, so the level of education increases. Right now it is difficult to attract fully-qualified teachers due to the financial difficulties.
- Fundraise to fulfill some of the school’s needs for educational material. Achieved
Long-term goal:
-Be able to build parts of, or a whole new school building. Ongoing and help needed

Latest situation (October 2009)
The owner of the apartment building that was the temporary rented home to the secondary school students sold the building in the summer. In September 2009 Ras Selas Diversity School re-opened as an Elementary School only, with place for approximately 70 children, on an adjacent rented plot. This school is designated for the children of the very poorest families in the area, living on incomes as low as USD 1 per day.
The school’s owners have purchased a new plot of land in Bole, near Addis Ababa’s international airport. The plan now is to build a new elementary school and health clinic on this site. The income from these facilities will, in part, be used to continue to finance Ras Selas Elementary School in Rafto. The cost of constructing the new school and health centre is €90,000 or 750,000 kroner.
A copy of the Development Plan for this new project is available on request.
Collaboration
RCNUWC has sent volunteers to teach at Ras Selas School since 2005 through the college’s Volunteer programme. This will continue.
Since DROP was founded in 2007 the charity has fund raised some 250,000 kroner.
However, DROP now needs to secure agreements with larger donors on behalf of Ras Selas and future projects. DROP is currently actively seeking donors and partners in both the public and private spheres in Norway.
RCNUWC alumni are working to establish DROP branches in Sweden, the UK and the USA.
You can help
Just as UWC ‘makes education a force for peace and a sustainable future’, please help DROP to make the world a more secure place by providing its children with access to a better education.
