Who are we

On 1st November 2006, a group of teachers and students from Red Cross Nordic United World College (RCNUWC) went to Fargerike Førde, an annual international event in Førde, to sell food from different parts of the world. Fargerike Førde it helped us raise some money, and that was our first pool of funds.

Shortly after the event, a few pioneering members, inspired by Daniel and Barbara Toa-Kwapong who were involved in the event, decided to establish a group called ‘DROP’, the name of which signifies two aspects of the organisation:

1. Metaphor

People often think they are too small to generate a big change. What we should do then is to combine our efforts and form a group, like how drops of water combine to fill up seas and oceans. We believe that unity allows us to bring a positive change to the society and make the world a better place to live in.

2. Motto

Sometimes we enjoy our lives too much and forget to turn back to care for other people (wherever they may be). Since we are blessed with what we have, we should remember others and do what we can to alleviate the challenges they face. ‘DROP’ is therefore an acronym that stands for ‘Do Remember Other People’.

DROP at this stage was a small school-wide organisation composed of only a few pioneering student and staff members. The group’s aim, in brief, is to build and support school in developing countries. It really started working on the Gutteye School issue as its first project in November 2006, and it still continues until now. More people become interested in contributing, resulting in the organisation’s expansion to more than 40 members.

In May 2007, DROP requested for and succeeded in the registration as an official Norwegian organisation. Our organisation number is 991 285 857.

DROP’s Ideas and Objectives

We would like to hereby acknowledge Yokohama International School (YIS), Japan, as the originator of the concept ‘Schools Building Schools’ (SBS) programme, in 1998, which inspired us to set our objectives. Please see more information about SBS on the website http://www.yis.ac.jp/community/sbs.htm.

DROP agrees strongly with SBS concept, and would like to attain two following goals:

1. Support education and build schools in the developing world

DROP, even though it is an official organisation, is strongly related to RCNUWC as its motherland. It comprises of mostly RCNUWC students, and RCN has generously helped us in numerous occasions, and we are grateful for the assistance received. We therefore follow the mission of UWC, which is:

‘UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.’ (UWC mission statement)

Education enriches people with knowledge, which in turn will allow them to bring a better future to the world. These people especially include children as they are next generation who can become a positive leading force in this. Therefore, DROP wants to support those who do not have access to get a chance to receive an education.

2. Increase awareness of the importance of education in Economically Less Developed Countries (ELDCs).

We are working hard in the hope of attaining these goals in future.
